Thanksgiving usually involves a delicious meal shared with family and friends. It is also a time to give thanks for all that we have and help those in need.

An animal shelter in California is hoping to give homeless dogs something to be thankful for this year – a family, even if it is only temporary.

While shelter dogs love a tasty treat, they want nothing more than a loving family of their own. Dozens of dogs are waiting at Fresno Humane Animal Services for a forever home.

The shelter is hoping to find homes for many adult dogs by reducing their adoption fee to $25 for the month of November. They posted, “Give a shelter dog something to be thankful for… give them a HOME this holiday season! 🐾🏡 In return, they’ll keep you warm on cold nights and accompany you on all your fall adventures. 🍂 🐕 Oh, and they’ll happily take care of your Thanksgiving leftovers!”

Cat lovers can also add a sweet feline to their family for just $25. The shelter shared, “We have many kitties fixed and ready for adoption 😺 These adorable faces are waiting for you!”

Staff came up with a way to help make the Thanksgiving holiday special for the dogs and give them a much-needed break from the shelter. “Operation Wishbone” is a drive-thru foster event held at the shelter on Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. Foster families can drive up and pick up their foster dog who will stay with them through the weekend.

The foster process is simple. Find an adoptable dog that you think would be a good fit in your home and email foster@fresnohumane.org. Fosters not only save lives but offer a shy or frightened pet hope.

The shelter hopes people fall in love with their foster dog and end up adopting him/her or will continue to foster until the dog finds a forever home. Even if the dogs return the following week, they will benefit from the time spent in a home with a loving family.

All dogs and cats remaining at the shelter will be treated to a special Thanksgiving meal. The shelter asked their supporters to help by purchasing canned chicken, canned green beans and canned pumpkin puree.
