It was my second time fostering for Broward Animal Control back in 2011. The minute I saw them, I knew I had to take them and I knew at least one of them would be a foster failure. There were two beautiful DSH white kittens with blue eyes in the cage, under two pounds and needing foster. I went to go find the foster coordinator so that I could take them.

Carrie told me that they had been part of a litter of seven and all of the others had passed from distemper. She did not want me to take them, as she felt that they, too, would pass. I told her that I wanted to give them both a chance regardless, aware that they might not make it. They grew into beautiful bonded Siamese lilac point adults. I named the female cat Spaz and the male cat Spud. Spaz because she was little and crazy, Spud because he went crazy for potato chips.

Spud became the alpha in my group, but at least once a year would have flair ups in which his temperature would climb dangerously high and he would lose interest in food and have to be hospitalized. He was definitely my most expensive cat, even though they were two for $12 at the shelter when I adopted them.

I affectionately referred to him as my a**hole cat. He was the one who would always knock things over (on purpose), boss the other cats (except his sister) around and was king of the castle (even over my two dogs). He was my handsome special boy but yesterday, almost four years from the date I first met him and fell in love, I had to say goodbye to my wonderful little boy. I am still waiting on test results to find out what happened but part of it was probably a result of his distemper flair ups.

I love him and miss him dearly. You’ll always be in my heart, my special boy!
