Once upon a time about 15 years ago, I was a truck driver, running a schedule to Richmond, Virginia. Right at a turn on my route, there was a big bridge that crosses the Dan River. When I made the turn that night at the light there, the headlights picked up a bit of orange fluff sitting on the white line just before you get to the bridge itself. Being the cat lady that I am, I immediately recognized it for an itty bitty kitten.

Fortunately, there was plenty of room to get off on the shoulder and be completely off the road. I guess when the air brakes set, it scared the daylights out of this bitty kitten, and he scampered down into the rocks on the other side of the guardrail. Flashlight in hand, and heavy gloves on, I followed the meows until I almost stepped on him in the dark. With the persuasion of a bit of leftover peanut butter sandwich, he agreed to let me scoop him up. He was so small, I could cup him in my hands.

I just happened to have a cardboard box in the truck with the flaps still intact that made a great carrier for the little floof. All that took about 10 minutes. Once in the truck, he settled right down and slept all the way to Richmond.

That little itty bitty kitten grew into the sweetest cat who snuggled with us every night. Sunny Boy had a big purr motor and loved to give kitty kisses. Although he never lost that worried look on his face, he had been living the good life, spoiled rotten, up to his last breath just a few weeks ago. He was being held by his family when he slipped away from us. We will miss this sweet boy.
