Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) is the largest animal shelter in southern Colorado and never turns a pet away. However, last Thursday they saw a large influx of animals and took in 132 in one day.
The shelter is currently caring for nearly 600 animals and needed to utilize their emergency shelter kennels. The 92 cats that arrived on Thursday were not from one hoarding case but a mix of transfers and surrenders.
According to HSPPR, “All 132 animals came from owner surrenders, stray intakes, transfers from our Pueblo shelter, or pets returning from foster care.”
They posted a plea for help on Facebook. “Thursday was an alarming day for us. We don’t see numbers like this every day.”
They went on to say, “These animals needed our help, and as an open admission shelter, we never turn away a pet in need.
The resources required to care for this influx of pets is draining, and with almost 600 animals being cared for at our Colorado Springs shelter, we need your help now more than ever.”
The shelter is asking for donations to care for the current animals and encourage people to adopt to make space for more animals that need their help.

The shelter is hoping to find home for numerous felines by offering 50% off adoption fees until October 30 for all cats one year and older.
