It’s always interesting to see how quickly dogs pick up on new tricks. At one point, I had two little dogs: a miniature Goldendoodle and a Yorkie-pomeranian mix. The Goldendoodle was eager to please and would perform new tricks almost without training! It was as if he just innately knew what to do.
The other dog, however, was more cat-like in her desire to learn new skills. She’d know what I was asking but would choose whether or not she wanted to follow through. It was nearly impossible to get her to do basic commands like “sit” or “stay” unless she was in the mood.
Dogs that are more eager to please and willing to learn, like my Goldendoodle, can really pick up some interesting skills. Just take Maggie, for example.
The 2-year-old German Shepherd lives in New Brunswick with her owner, Yannick Devost. In true Canadian fashion, Devost is a bit of a hockey fan and it seems he’s passed that fandom onto his pup!
Maggie is now a trained hockey goalie and she’s quite skilled at it.
According to CTV Atlantic News, Devost explained, “She always had great reflexes. When she was a young puppy, it was very obvious she was good at catching balls, or whatever we threw at her, she would catch and bring back.”
Because of her naturally impressive ball-catching skills, Devost decided to put her talent to the test. Slowly, he introduced Maggie to the puck and used basic commands to teach the dog the rules of the game.
It wasn’t long before she became a goalie pro!
