A border collie is being credited with saving his owner after he led rescuers to the injured man in a remote part of the Sierra Nevada forest.

According to a Facebook post by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue, a 53-year-old man fell around 70 feet while out for a hike with his border collie and is believed to have broken his hip and multiple ribs.

Search and rescue was deployed to find the man, but it was thanks to his dog that the mission was a success.

As the Facebook post explained:

“Earlier today SAR was requested by CalFire to assist in searching for a 53 year old male that had fallen approximately 70 feet and complained of a broken hip and broken ribs. 25 SAR Members responded and located the subject but the true credit goes to the subjects k9 Border Collie that ran through the forest approximately 200 yards and in true ‘LASSIE’ fashion to flag down two searchers and led them back to the subject which was covered in a camo tarp.”

The post went on to say that SAR members were able to get the man to an air ambulance about a half-mile away so he could be transported out of the forest to a hospital for a proper assessment and medical care.

As for the dog, he was “transported back to Grass Valley and given a well-deserved dinner.”

According to KCRA 3, Sgt. Dennis Haack with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue said:

“At first we didn’t believe it because it sounded like a movie. When they came back and actually described it to us, the reality was that they had followed the dog directly to the victim.”

He went on to explain that the man had fallen the night before, but he didn’t have cellphone service to call for help. Eventually, the man managed to find enough signal to call authorities and the SAR team was deployed.

Hopefully he has a swift recovery so he can be reunited with his heroic pup!
