Pet abandonment has always been an issue but it has gotten significantly worse since the pandemic happened. It’s common for shelters to get around 7 million pets each year, and they believe that about half of those pets are abandoned.
The 7 million pets that were just mentioned are dogs and cats, as they are known to be the most common pets in the world. This story, however, is of an abandoned horse left in the middle of the busy streets of Philadelphia.
The local residents that spotted the horse immediately called the only animal care and control organization in the state, ACCT Philly. With the quick actions of the locals, the horse was able to be taken off the streets and was kept in a safer space even before the ACCT team got there.
“Thankfully, the horse, now named Darien, was in good hands with the community who kept him cool and safe until we were able to load him on our trailer and get him off the busy street,” ACCT Philly posted.
Even inexperienced eyes can tell that the horse is in a rough shape just by looking at the few pictures shared by ACCT Philly.
“He’s very underweight and will need some extra TLC,” ACCT said in their post, “and we are reaching out to our rescue partners about him as a Philly is no place for a horse of course!”
Philadelphia isn’t exactly known for green pastures and open fields so where did the horse come from?
Reportedly, Darien had been purchased the same exact day that he was abandoned. I couldn’t help but scoff when I read that, according to witnesses, the man that purchased Darien said that he didn’t have any horseshoes for his new horse so he no longer wanted him, and then just left him there in the streets.
So many questions are left unanswered with regard to the poor horse’s condition. But, honestly speaking, I couldn’t care less about who sold the horse, in that kind of state no less, and who abandoned him so heartlessly.
I’ll leave it to the authorities and hope that wherever Darien came from, they’d be promptly educated on how to properly care for a horse, or any other pet for that matter. Always remember that adopting a pet isn’t easy. It’s important to be informed and educated when it comes to giving our animal companions the proper care they need.
Darien is on his way to recovery and according to ACCT Philly, Darien has been relocated to the Last Chance Ranch, one of their rescue partners which is experienced in rehabilitating animals.
