It’s not fair that any dog has to live in a shelter for extended periods of time, but it’s especially unfair when that dog happens to be pregnant.

A shelter kennel is better than life on the streets, but it’s not a great place to give birth or raise puppies. That’s the situation Zia the pitbull found herself in after she was rescued in Central Valley, California.

Zia was living in the shelter and was about to give birth when Noelani showed up to find a foster dog.

Noelani, with Fresno Bully Rescue, regularly fosters dogs that she feels could use the extra attention. She chooses the dog by going down to the shelter and looking for a pup that needs some extra love or support.

When she started browsing the shelter for a new foster dog, she was immediately drawn to Zia. She shared with The Dodo that Zia was shaking in her kennel and really needed a more comfortable place to give birth.

Noelani was able to get Zia out of the shelter and took her home to foster. Zia was set up with her own space to give birth in, plenty of blankets, and a lot of love. It wasn’t long after arriving at Noelani’s house before Zia went into labor!

Noelani described Zia as being “super-relaxed” after giving birth to her pups. Perhaps she was calm and relaxed because she knew she and her puppies were in good hands!

Noelani cared for Zia and her puppies until the pups were all old enough to be adopted. One by one, they found forever homes and it wasn’t long before it was just Zia left.

Thankfully, Zia got her happily ever after home, too! A woman named Liz drove from San Fransisco all the way to Fresno to meet Zia and adopt her. Liz saw Zia’s story on Instagram and instantly fell in love with her.

While many pit bulls end up being euthanized in shelters, Zia and all her puppies got a second chance at life and found loving homes all thanks to Noelani!
