Losing a pet is never easy, and it’s even harder when that loss is unexpected. Sometimes, we’re given a timeline with a terminal diagnosis or simply old age. But other times, our furry friends leave us completely out of the blue.

It’s hard enough to deal with the loss, but it can be harder when we have a bunch of their belongings in the home.

Sometimes, we’re faced with the grief of a pet right after we’ve purchased them new items, like food, medicine, or toys.

That was the reality that Anna Brose was facing when she tragically lost her dog, Gus, right after ordering him a new bag of food.

The unopened food bag was in her home with no one to eat it and Brose wasn’t sure what to do with it. Rather than throwing it out, she decided to see if Chewy, the online pet supply retailer that she purchased the food from, would take it back.

She shared on Twitter:

“I contacted Chewy last week to see if I could return an unopened bag of my dog’s food after he died. They 1) gave me a full refund, 2) told me to donate the food to the shelter, and 3) had flowers delivered today with the gift note signed by the person I talked to??”

People were blown away by how generous and thoughtful Chewy had been in response to Anna’s message. In fact, her tweet was liked over 740,000 times and retweeted over 50,000 times!

Thousands of people commented on it, calling out Chewy for being such a great company (and sending their condolences to Anna and Gus).

Chewy even responded to Anna’s tweet, saying:

“It’s the least we could do, Anna. We hope these flowers will help to keep your spirits up.”

According to the company website, Chewy has received Newsweek’s recognition for “America’s Best Customer Service” for the past four consecutive years (2019-2022), as well as the Forbes Halo 100 distinction as one of the “Most Loved Brands in 2021.”

Given their level of care when interacting with customers, it’s easy to see why they’d win the hearts of customers around the country!
