Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center in Columbus, Ohio, lost power on Tuesday, which happened to be the hottest day of the year. With temperatures over 90 degrees, the staff immediately posted a plea for help to keep the shelter dogs cool.
“We need your help. The power is out here at the shelter, and our pups needs ice to keep cool in this blazing heat!”
They asked the community to donate large bags of ice, kiddie pools, bedding, large towels, and peanut butter for frozen treats. People immediately responded and within the hour a line of cars arrived filled with supplies and hundreds of bags of ice.
“You all are amazing! The community donated hundreds of bags of ice to the shelter, and we now have a peace of mind that our shelter pups will be cool tonight, with the supervision of our overnight staff. Thank you all,” wrote the shelter.

“After taking the dogs out for a quick potty break, the students helped to make sure all of the dogs were able to have a little fun and cool down in kiddie pools of ice that were donated by the community to the shelter,” shared the shelter.
Pizza, snacks, and water arrived for staff and volunteers to keep them fueled as they worked day and night to care for the homeless dogs.
The power was restored on Wednesday and Umma, one of the adoptable dogs, is thrilled to have the air conditioning working again. The kiddie pools will continue to be used throughout the summer to keep the shelter dogs cool.
Over 150 dogs are waiting at the shelter and would love to meet you on Saturday when the shelter resumes adoptions. Check out all the adoptable dogs here.
