Steely is a sweet, loving dog who didn’t deserve to be abandoned by her family. Fortunately, a neighbor noticed the dog’s owner hadn’t been home for nearly a week and called for help.

When officers arrived, they found the house was indeed empty, except for Steely, who’d been left outside in a filthy cage without any food, water, or protection from the hot Louisiana sun.

“What they found was a small wire crate filled with feces, no water or food, and in the direct sunlight,” shelter workers told Greater Good Charities. “She was hunkered over and sat there with sadness and hunger in her eyes.”

But despite this cruel treatment, Steely blossomed back at the shelter, where the neglected dog was thrilled to finally have some human contact. “Steely has now bloomed into the friendliest, happiest little pup she was always meant to be,” said shelter workers.

Steely’s luck changed again when she landed a spot on our June Flight to Freedom, which will fly at-risk shelter dogs from Louisiana–where shelter overcrowding leaves animals at risk of euthanasia– to shelters where they’ll be quickly adopted.

On June 14, Steely will join 50+ at-risk shelter dogs flying from Louisiana to Wisconsin on our next Flight to Freedom!

Steely will be joined on the flight by Tito and Tasha, two Louisiana puppies who were cruelly thrown into a ditch off the side of the highway with their littermates. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan saw the hungry, weary puppies walking around by the highway and stopped to help.

“She took in the flea-ridden pups, bathed them, and gave them a warm place to stay until the shelter opened on Monday,” said shelter workers. “Lucky for those pups an amazing lady passed by and was able to change their future.”

Our June 14 Flight to Freedom will also fly Chessy, a friendly dog found running loose around her neighborhood in Louisiana. But although Chessy wore a collar and looked well-cared for, nobody ever stopped by the shelter to claim her.

After waiting in vain for Chessy’s original owners, shelter workers finally booked her our June 14 flight to help the imminently adoptable dog find a new home.

Of course, Flights to Freedom–which are operated by Greater Good Charities’ Good Flights with support from The Animal Rescue Site–are also funded by reader donations, which means we’re counting on your support to help us fly Steely, Tito, Tasha, and Chessy to safety this summer.

Can you make a donation to help us fly all these shelter pets to safety and adoption? Just $5 helps us fund 125 air miles for one shelter pet flier, while larger donations help us fly even more animals. Thanks for helping us give shelter pets a second chance at life!
