May is National Pet Month, and the perfect time to show your pets some extra love!

Celebrate National Pet Month by taking your dog for extra walks in the park, which is hardly a chore when May’s flowers are in bloom.

Or spoil your fur baby with toys and treats from The Animal Rescue Site Store, both pampering your pet and helping to feed shelter pets in need!

National Pet Month is also a great excuse to share photos and stories about your fur baby on social media, which might encourage other people to adopt a shelter pet, too.

Of course, shelters are also filled with highly adoptable rescues who could become excellent companions if someone just gave them a chance! Here are 4 ways to help shelter pets feel loved during National Pet Month, too.

1. Adopt a shelter pet

National Pet Month is the perfect time to add a shelter pet to your family. Not only are shelters filled with adoptable pets in all shapes and sizes, they’re overflowing with rescues being returned (through no fault of their own) as the country reopens after two years of lockdown.

2. Foster a shelter pet

Shelter overcrowding has also left shelters and rescues desperate for foster parents, who play a critical role by providing a quiet home for orphaned kittens, puppies, and other shelter pets who need extra attention. If you’d like to become a foster parent, please sign up for Good Home, a Greater Good Charities program matching foster parents with shelters and rescues seeking local volunteers.

3. Make a donation

Shelters can always use donations of food and shelter supplies, especially as inflation and supply chain issues cause costs to soar. Contact your local shelter or make a donation through Greater Good Charities, which provides pallets of pet food, critical shelter supplies, and care packages to help shelters and shelter pets meet their essential needs.

4. Help fly shelter pets to safety

Flights to Freedom transport pets from overcrowded shelters where they risk euthanasia to safety in shelters where they’ll be quickly adopted.

Operated by Good Flights, a program of Greater Good Charities, in partnership with Animal Rescue Site, Flights to Freedom have saved thousands of shelter pets from the South, where hurricanes, heartworm disease, and shelter overcrowding leave animals in danger. Without this life-saving program, many shelter pet fliers would be at risk of euthanasia.

In honor of National Pet Month, we’ll be operating a special Flight to Freedom on May 25, flying dozens of at-risk shelter pets, like Fendi (above), from Louisiana to safety on the East Coast. Can you make a donation to help us fund Fendi’s Flight to Freedom?
