15 years is a long time for a dog to live, and when they make it to that age, we often think of them being sick and weak. They may struggle to eat or walk and spend a lot of time sleeping. But every now and again, we hear of a dog in his golden years living his best life – and that’s exactly what Smiley the golden retriever was doing.
15-year-old Smiley was not only facing old age but blindness as well. He had a rough start to life, being born into a puppy mill to make the breeders a quick profit.
Sadly, one of the many issues with puppy mills is that they don’t follow good breeding practices and many puppies end up being born with issues.
For Smiley, he was born without any eyes. When a puppy is born with a problem like that, it’s not uncommon for them to be euthanized. Even an owner with the best intentions might put a dog down who’s not born “normal” because they’re not sure how they could live a full and fulfilled life with their condition.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case for Smiley because a kind family from Canada stepped in to rescue him. They decided to give Smiley the most accomodating and loving home so he could live out his life in peace and happiness, despite his disability.
Smiley ended up being quite playful and stayed that way throughout the years. Even when he reached 15 years of age, he wouldn’t be slowed down!
In a video shared on YouTube, Smiley’s owner shared the moment that Smiley got to go out and play in the snow. She walked ahead and called him so he could follow her voice, and he truly had a blast!
In the video, you can see Smiley prancing around, tail wagging full speed. His happiness is so pure and sweet. Watch the video below:
