In a devastating turn of events that has left the animal rescue community reeling, the Portage Animal Protective League made a shocking discovery at an Ohio home belonging to the president and co-founder of Canine Lifeline, Inc.
According to USA Today, a distressing tip led the agency to obtain a search warrant for the Mantua Township residence, where they uncovered a heart-wrenching scene. Inside the home, agents were met with the tragic sight of 146 dogs, confined to their crates, their bodies dead and decomposing.
The Portage Animal Protective League, responding to an impending animal cruelty charge against the homeowner, took immediate action to investigate the matter. The suspect was named as a “founding operator” of Canine Lifeline Inc. but authorities are still tyring to determine the cause of the dogs’ deaths.
The news sent shockwaves through Canine Lifeline, a nonprofit animal rescue organization that has been dedicated to saving adoptable dogs since its establishment in 2009. Taking to their Facebook page, the organization expressed profound shock, horror, and confusion regarding the revelations concerning their president and co-founder.
The volunteers of Canine Lifeline, who have poured their hearts into the organization, were blindsided by these revelations. Unaware of any medical conditions and completely unaware of the number of dogs she harbored or the conditions in which they lived, they now find themselves grappling with grief. In a solemn statement, Canine Lifeline expressed their deep sorrow over this tragedy and assured the public that they are fully cooperating with the authorities.
“Like the general public, volunteers of the non-profit animal rescue organization Canine Lifeline have been shocked, horrified and confused to learn of the devastating revelations regarding its president and co-founder, and the dogs that suffered in her home,” the organization posted on its website. “We share your grief and despair.”
“After first responders reported to her home in response to this medical emergency, an investigation was triggered that has uncovered overwhelming evidence of ongoing fatal animal neglect in both her current residence in Parma as well as her former home in Mantua,” the group posted.
Canine Lifeline’s mission, as stated on their website, has been to rescue adoptable dogs from the grim fate of euthanasia due to space limitations or treatable medical conditions. Primarily focusing on dogs from county animal shelters in Ohio and Kentucky, the organization aims to intervene in areas where rural pounds struggle to meet the needs of the countless dogs under their care.
In the wake of this tragedy, the animal rescue community has been left grappling with a multitude of emotions. Shock, sadness, and confusion pervade the hearts of those who have dedicated their lives to the well-being of animals.
The Portage Animal Protective League, committed to ensuring justice for these innocent lives, is urging anyone with information regarding this heartrending case to come forward. They can be contacted at humaneofficer@portageapl.org.
The hope amidst this darkness lies in the resilience and dedication of the countless volunteers and organizations who continue to fight for the welfare of animals. They remain steadfast in their commitment to rescue, protect, and advocate for those without a voice.
